Plastering a brick wall is a great way to create a smooth, even surface for painting or decorating. Before starting, ensure the wall is clean and free from dust, grease, or any loose matter. Applying a bonding agent or a PVA (polyvinyl acetate) solution mixed with water helps the plaster adhere properly. Once the bonding agent is tacky, prepare the plaster mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring a smooth and lump-free consistency.
Using a plastering trowel, apply the first coat of plaster in an even layer, working from the bottom up. Spread the plaster using firm, sweeping motions and keep the thickness around 5-10mm. A straight edge or screed can help level the surface. Allow this base coat to partially dry before lightly scoring it with a plastering comb to create a key for the second layer. Apply a thinner finishing coat, around 2-3mm thick, and use a clean trowel to smooth out any imperfections.
Once the plaster begins to set, mist it with water and polish the surface using a trowel for a smooth finish. Allow the plaster to dry completely before painting or decorating—this can take a few days depending on humidity levels. If any small cracks appear, they can be filled with a fine layer of plaster or sanded down. With patience and the right technique, you can achieve a professional-looking plastered wall.
